Why Your Nonprofit Should Use LinkedIn

Building your organization’s LinkedIn page takes time and effort, but the outcome can be transformative in more ways than one.

Successful nonprofits know that to be successful, they need to operate like a business. This also means marketing and using social media platforms like one. Being active and engaging on sites like LinkedIn means reaching diverse networks, staying informed with funders and their opportunities, and maximizing impact.

Building Credibility and Connection

An active presence on LinkedIn invites people to engage with your organization on a deeper level, establishes credibility as a professional entity, and promotes ongoing services that can motivate others to participate, volunteer, or donate. This type of engagement may not occur on other platforms. What makes LinkedIn different from other platforms is the audience.

DonorBox reveals that “Unlike with most other social networks, 90 million LinkedIn users are senior-level influencers and 63 million are in decision-making positions.”

Additionally, the Association for Fundraising Professionals reports that over half of LinkedIn users are high-income earners, and 56% are willing to give to nonprofits. Maintaining an active LinkedIn profile positions your organization to strategically tap into resources and relationships beyond your personal community.

Virtual Networking

Whether your organization is just starting out or has an established presence in the sector, LinkedIn allows you to reach and connect to a broader audience that could be extremely

beneficial for longevity. For example, posting, commenting, liking, and following similar organizations is key to increasing awareness and donor engagement. LinkedIn for Nonprofits states, “LinkedIn is the ideal platform for nonprofits to reach a large audience of professionals who have the means to give back. This includes everyone from prospective board members to people interested in making major gifts. Since LinkedIn is a professional network, it’s also a great place to find talented employees and skilled volunteers who are passionate about your cause ” (LinkedIn for Nonprofits, 2022).

Encourage current staff, volunteers, and board members to engage with the organization’s page to draw in their networks. This may lead others to endorse your organization’s services and skills, thereby establishing credibility as a known and trusted community partner.

Multipurpose Tool

LinkedIn can be used for many different purposes simultaneously. While it’s still useful to promote your organization across many various outlets to reach as many people as possible, LinkedIn enhances those connections for multiple purposes at once. Community members, prospective candidates, donors, and volunteers can learn and interact with all the important information about your organization in one central location.  Also, LinkedIn enables organizations to hire, fundraise, market, and connect through its platform’s tools. It’s an interactive snapshot of your organization’s mission, services, and impact that can promote more depth than other social platforms. For instance, many users start conversations, repost their thoughts, or offer support for a post, which can lead to further action and involvement. When users see their networks interact with a page, it increases their likelihood of engagement with you as well. Building your organization’s LinkedIn page takes time and effort, but the outcome can be transformative in more ways than one.
